I thought Discover Weekly wasn’t available in India. Turns out it’s been in India since 2021. I tried it, and it’s as good as people say.

I recently came across the Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify and was surprised to see it, since I thought it wasn’t available in India. Apparently, it has been available here since 2021 (compared to 2015 in the US), but I had never noticed it. I wasn’t an active Spotify user over the last two years and had been using Apple Music before that, so I never experienced it. Naturally, I was curious to see how it performed, as I’ve often heard praise for this feature. It’s probably one of Spotify’s biggest differentiators from Apple Music.

I tried it last week and liked most of the songs that were curated. This week’s playlist also worked well for me, I enjoyed the majority of the tracks again. Interestingly, last week’s playlist was filled with global songs, while this week it shifted to all Indian songs. Some were tracks I had heard before, and others only in passing or as background music on Reels.

Since most of my listening time usually goes to podcasts, I’ve been trying to reduce that a little and devote more time to music. Discover Weekly makes that transition easier, it gives me fresh music every week without the effort of curating my own playlists or browsing the app for something new. If the quality of the curation continues to be this good, I think I have no doubt that listening to music will overtake the podcast time.
